Arden Fair established a new civic presence in Sacramento with the expansion and renovation of an existing single-level regional shopping center into a 1.2 million sf, two-level galleria regional shopping center with major department stores.
The main challenge at Arden Fair was to take an existing single level dated and ailing mall anchored by two aging department stores and turn it into a vibrant economic powerhouse. The existing Sears building was demolished, allowing for two-level expansion of the mall to the west along its main axis. A second level was designed to be built over the existing mall building creating a continuous second floor over the entire mall footprint. A new Center Court and Food Court were added along with three new department store buildings - Nordstrom, JCPenney and a new Sears. This “overbuild” has outperformed its regional competition and become a landmark destination in Sacramento.
