Distilling the essence of San Diego's climate and the quality of its natural environment
“The formerly suburban site is now part of the heavily trafficked, urban fabric of greater San Diego. Constrained on the north and south by parking structures, and bounded by the river, transit station, and trolley lines on the south, the center needed a visible urban face, where there was little room for it.”
The challenge at Fashion Valley was to expand and reimagine a dated, but economically successful center, upgrading the retail complex with a renovation and expansion program that would appeal to a more sophisticated clientele and the upscale tourist market, and attract more upscale merchants. Repositioning at this scale, 1.7 million SF, was no small task. The design expanded the center vertically with shops, restaurants, terrace dining, a food court, and a multi-screen cinema, and connected the project to a series of new, structured parking buildings and a new light rail/bus terminal.
