Elegant and relaxing
The renovation and horizontal expansion of this 1.3 million SF super-regional center is literally turning night to day, illuminating The Shops at Mission Viejo’s dark, closed interior with skylights and reflective flooring. Moving through the center, the customer will encounter a series of vaulted galleries and tall clerestory lit patios.
The challenge was to take the aging and struggling Mission Viejo Mall and have it be reborn as the upscale Shops at Mission Viejo, complete with two new department stores, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue, two new parking structures, and a new food court. The original mall opened in 1972 and was a low to mid-level market property with Montgomery Wards, Robinson’s-May, Macy’s and Buffum’s. With the recent renovation, both Robinson’s-May and Macy’s have expanded and remodeled, keeping pace with the growing affluence of the Orange County customer base. A stroll through the mall’s Gallery evokes an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere using details featuring Bavarian limestone paving, casual resort-like furniture, glass and metal rails, stone fountains and custom light fixtures. Liberal use of natural lighting enhances the spatial experience of the gallery and compliments the center’s resort-like image by bringing the outside inside.
