Inspiring Civic Spaces
For centuries shopping has been a catalyst for social gatherings that have captured the public imagination and inspired exceptional civic spaces and buildings around the world. We believe it still should.
Create engaging community assetsFrom our earliest commissions we have been evolving the retail prototype, continually exploring new ways to re-imagine the commercial model to create engaging community assets. Working with leading developers and retailers around the globe, we have mastered the rules of retail well enough to know when to break them to create meaningful architecture that plays a robust role in its neighborhood, city and region. These sophisticated buildings are designed to serve the developer, the merchant and the shopper, enduring as they adapt to meet changing trends or to incorporate new technologies. Whether it’s a newly constructed mall or a repositioned retail center, part a large mixed-use development or a smaller, infill solution, STIR Architecture's projects have a way of becoming the well-frequented gathering places for locals and must-see destinations for visitors.
Although, new construction has seen an uptick in the last few years, the renovation of existing properties remains an important part of the changing retail landscape. We work closely with developers and retailers to convert aging, underperforming properties into fresh, successful retail centers to meet ever-evolving markets. From a simple facelift to a radical repositioning, we have the expertise and experience to transform yesterday's mall into tomorrow's destination of choice.
Over the years the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) has conferred 20 ICSC International Design & Development Awards to our projects, against stiff international competition including the group’s highest honor in 2010—the VIVA! Award. Other retail and retail driven mixed-use projects have also won awards from the Urban Land Institute and our professional organizations. These awards are especially meaningful as they come from our clients, who judge success by hard numbers like sales per square foot and ROI. In return, we share our knowledge of retail design through our service and teaching for ICSC and ULI as well as in the books we have published on retail related projects.
