Over a decade ago, a team of developers, designers and local officials began to imagine a project in the heart of historic Utrecht. Together, Klepierre, STIR Architecture and the City of Utrecht focused on what makes cities great and are characteristic of the city’s historic fabric-connections, landmarks, diversity, scale, permeability, city rooms, discovery.
With the opening of the first phase of Hoog Catharijne, one of the largest urban redevelopments in Europe, residents and visitors are bringing the early vision to life as they stroll the bright halls of the new retail center and look out at the surrounding streetscape and the revived canal that meanders through the development. People move easily from the retail shops to meet friends in the historic city center or catch their train home from Central Station.
This is modern urban living – multi-layered, rich in choice, color and detail, and ultimately in experiences. This is the beginning of a revitalized Hoog Catharijne.
