Programming shapes the new heart of ELAC’s campus

A unique project located on a constrained site located in the central heart of East Los Angeles College, this building encompasses a large number of diverse uses which created complexity in how the building would balance being both dynamic and functional for users.

STIR Architecture worked with the various user groups at East Los Angeles College to establish the needs and functions of the building and created a program and criteria document to clearly represent those requirements to the competing design-build teams during the RFP process. The building encompasses a large number of diverse uses which creates complexity in how the building balances dynamism and function. The Student Center & Bookstore Complex is highly utilized, housing the campus bookstore as well as the only food service venue on campus – the latter is a use that the campus had not had on site in many years.

This 55,000 GSF, three-story building comprises several uses including: food service, bookstore, student activities, health services, large multi-purpose room, office space, and student, staff and faculty lounges.
