Bringing a vision to life

The freshly reinvented Del Amo Fashion Center, with its light filled galleries, sleek glass storefronts and sophisticated finishes, is testament to STIR’s commitment to executing the design vision for the fabled mall.

At one time, Del Amo Mall was the largest shopping center in the U.S., expanding through the amalgamation of several centers and department stores.  In its heyday, the development included nearly 3,000,000 square feet of retail.  As the retail landscape evolved over the years, the mall experienced several changes in ownership and renovations.  In 2010, the current owners, Simon Properties made plans for an extensive multi-year, multi-phase renovation and engaged Altoon Partners, now STIR Architecture, to work on the redesign of the property. The challenge was to reinvent the tired mall, turning the patchwork property into a coherent retail center.

The open and sophisticated design of the newly re-imagined Del Amo Fashion Center highlights the display character of retail and creates a welcoming public space. This 2.2 million square feet center, naturally expresses the South Bay beach lifestyle and its connection to the outdoors. The abundance of natural lighting, living green walls, and gorgeous palm trees reinforce this connection throughout the project. This premiere shopping destination features a food court, several anchor stores, including two Macy’s locations, Nordstrom, JCPenney and Sears, more than 200 retailers, multiple full-service restaurants, a fitness center, and an AMC Theatres multiplex.

The team worked closely with Simon Properties to keep the center open and in operation during construction.
