A sense of historic continuity

“Tarsus has remained a vital urban environment for centuries. Part of that richness is due to the community’s pride, spirit and the ability to look forward without abandoning the past. It was important that our design capture that sense of historic continuity in this new center that is now part of the city’s future.”

Tarsu evokes the power of place establishing physical and symbolic connections with the fabric of the centuries-old city Tarsus through shifting scales, overlapping spaces, and the creative use of a local material palette that resonates with the local community. The distinctive design of this new bi-level retail and entertainment destination emphasizes connectivity through pathways, connected water elements. Taking its cues from a richly layered urban and cultural context, the project’s curving and flowing geometries were informed by the surrounding mountains, the delta, the winding river, and the dynamic urban setting of the Old City. Tarsu defines a new public realm and civic gateway for the city, one of Turkey’s most rapidly developing cities and historically a vital link between land and sea in the region.
